Accurate over clever
Watering-day rules change. This page explains the idea, not a calendar.
Homeowners in Winter Garden, Horizon West, and Clermont often ask "which days can I water?" The honest answer is that it depends on your water-management district, your local government, whether a temporary water-shortage order is in effect, and sometimes whether you irrigate with reclaimed or potable water. Orlando West Irrigation does not publish a day-of-week table that could be wrong next month. This page explains the concepts and points to the official source.

What do "watering days" mean in Florida?
Florida's water-management districts and local governments limit when lawn and landscape irrigation may run. On SJRWMD's page, the restrictions set the time of day when watering may happen, how much water may be applied, and which days are allowed. The allowed days depend on whether the address ends in an odd or even number and on the time of year, with a different number of days during daylight saving time than during Eastern Standard Time. Nonresidential properties have their own days.
The district also limits how long each zone may run on an allowed day and lists exceptions, such as hand watering with a shut-off nozzle, micro-irrigation, establishing new plantings, and brief system runs for maintenance and repair. Read the exact wording on the SJRWMD page before you rely on any exception. This matching site is not your utility, not SJRWMD, and not a lawyer.
What applies in Winter Garden, Horizon West, and the rest of Orange County?
SJRWMD's page states that all of Orange County follows the St. Johns restrictions, with one listed exception (the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, which follows the South Florida Water Management District). That covers Winter Garden, Horizon West, Hamlin, Waterleigh, Windermere, Ocoee, Oakland, and Stoneybrook West. Your utility may add its own instructions, particularly for reclaimed water customers, so check its irrigation page as well.
Afternoon storms complicate schedules further. A rain sensor should skip a cycle after enough rain; it does not change the rules. See controller / timer and rain sensor myths. Local guides: Winter Garden and Horizon West.
What applies in Clermont and Minneola (Lake County)?
Clermont and Minneola are in Lake County. The City of Clermont's published irrigation schedule says the city follows SJRWMD guidelines. When we checked SJRWMD's page on October 4, 2026, it showed a Phase III Extreme Water Shortage declared for portions of several counties, including the portions of Lake County within the district. A shortage order tightens the allowed days and hours compared with the normal schedule. Orange County was not on that Phase III list when we checked.
Do not copy an Orange County day chart onto a Clermont controller. Open the official SJRWMD page and your utility's irrigation page, confirm whether the shortage order covers your address, and set the controller to match. See the Clermont guide for local irrigation context.
How do watering days relate to dry zones and repairs?
A brown patch is not proof you watered on the wrong day, and watering on an allowed day does not prove every head threw correctly. Fewer allowed days make coverage problems show faster, because a zone that misses one run may wait several days for the next one. If a zone stayed dry after the system ran, the fault may be a head, valve, or controller. If an HOA notice arrived, send a photo, the zone number if you have it, and the notice via HOA dry zones. Field failures belong on sprinkler repair.
The district's own conservation advice is practical: fix broken pipes and leaks, repair damaged or tilted heads, check that the timer settings are correct, and make sure the rain or soil-moisture sensor works so the system does not run after rain. Those are the same checks a matched irrigation tech works through.
What will this page never do?
- Publish a Monday-to-Sunday schedule presented as today's rule.
- Threaten fines or promise a fix on a particular day.
- Offer mowing or home-watch services.
- Replace your utility's or SJRWMD's instructions.
Practical next steps
Read SJRWMD watering restrictions for current district guidance and any shortage order.
Check whether your yard uses reclaimed or potable irrigation water.
Confirm rain-sensor and clock behavior before blaming the calendar.
Request a tech match if coverage, valves, or controllers look wrong.
Reclaimed or potable water: does it matter?
Many west Orange neighborhoods irrigate with reclaimed (reuse) water; others use potable water through an irrigation meter. Utility instructions can differ by source. If you are unsure which you have, look for purple valve-box lids, reclaimed-water signage, or your utility bill wording, then confirm with the utility. SJRWMD's rules also note that private irrigation wells are not authorized where reclaimed water is available for irrigation. A matched irrigation tech can explain what your controller is doing; they are not a substitute for the official restriction page.
How should I use the "last updated" date?
This page exists so homeowners and answer engines get a stable explanation: Orange County follows SJRWMD; days depend on address and season; water-shortage orders can tighten the rules, and one covered portions of Lake County when we last checked; verify on sjrwmd.com/wateringrestrictions. If another site lists "water Monday and Thursday only" without a date and source, treat it as stale. Our last-updated stamp is visible on purpose.
When coverage still fails on an allowed day, request a tech match for sprinkler repair or controller / timer help. Matching only: not mowing, not home watch.
Watering-days FAQs
- Do rain sensors stop a Florida afternoon storm from flooding the yard?
- A working sensor should skip a cycle after rain. The tech checks it.
- Is this lawn care or irrigation?
- Irrigation. Mowing is a different match.
- Why is one zone dry after the system ran?
- Could be a head, a valve or a controller. The tech confirms.
- Do you cover Horizon West and Waterleigh?
- Yes as a match in that map.
